Laparoscopic Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy

Laparoscopic gastric sleeve resection is a much newer procedure in which we would be removing about 75 to 80 percent of the volume of the stomach, while maintaining the natural openings into and out of the stomach. This procedure is simpler to perform than gastric bypass resulting in lower complication rates than gastric bypass.

The sleeve gastrectomy has higher complication rates than laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding because of the risk of leaks from the staple lines. Because we are not changing the gastrointestinal track it decreases the chances of complications like vitamin deficiencies that occur with gastric bypass surgery. Patients can lose weight similar to gastric bypass surgery over a pretty rapid time and this helps patient get rid of their medical problems as well as gastric bypass. The data shows that the overall weight loss with sleeve gastrectomy is similar to laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding.
